Ferrous Scrap Trade Thrived in First Quarter 2021

The most recent statistics provided by the Taiwanese Customs authorities suggests nearly 51% month-on-month surge in ferrous scrap imports by the country during the month of March 2021. The scrap imports totalled around 299,000 tons during the month.

The primary import source was the U.S., which accounted for roughly 132,400 tons of Taiwanese imports. Over the prior month, the imports from that country surged higher by nearly 83%. Meantime, the imports from Japan witnessed a decline of 24% to total 51,800 tons, said Customs data.

The cumulative scrap imports by the country recorded 18% decline over the previous year to total around 783,000 tons in Q1 2021. The primary scrap suppliers were the U.S. (305,000 tons) and Japan (204,000 tons).

The Vietnamese ferrous scrap imports skyrocketed by 71% from the prior month to 649,000 tons in March this year. The Q1 2021 imports too were up marginally by 3.5% from the year before to nearly 1.44 million tons. The March 2021 imports from Japan declined by almost one-fourth, whereas imports from other key destinations including the U.S., Australia and Hong Kong recorded notable surge.

Meantime, the Brazilian ferrous scrap imports surged significantly in March this year by almost 36 times.
